Working as a member of our small friendly clinic team, this new role will suit someone who has substantial experience of working in an optometric practice, has a positive can-do attitude, enjoys interacting with people, and is organised. The post will include dealing with patients and students in the teaching clinics, as well as providing some management support to the clinic manager.
This position is part-time for 2 days per week (14 hours per week), is available for a fixed-term period of 2 years and is available immediately.

Job Description
Job Purpose
Support the University Eye Clinic located in the School of Optometry carrying out eye examinations and other enhanced services to provide patients with the best clinical care and memorable patient journey. Providing advice, guidance and support to patients, staff and students ensuring the best clinical care and leadership to all.
Key Duties
- To examine the eyes of patients of all ages and ensure every patient receives a personalised recommendation based on their clinical and lifestyle requirements.
- To provide professional advice and guidance on clinical and visual concerns of internal and external customers that will have institute wide impacts, using judgement and creativity to suggest the most appropriate course of action where appropriate. Using all forms of communication ensuring complex and conceptual issues are understood and patients are referred appropriately.
- To demonstrate and supervise key ophthalmic techniques to undergraduate students and support staff where appropriate.
- To take responsibility for resolving issues independently within the eye clinic ensuring an efficient service and high level of patient care in line with the University and NHS Policy, as well as the ability to work within a multi-disciplinary team.
- To ensure that the provision Eye examinations and enhanced services are delivered to patients, timely & proactively. Changing the delivery according to customer requirements. Acknowledge and accommodate barriers to communication and understanding, working with elderly patients, carers and patients that have other sensory loss and/or special needs.
- To establish working relationships with key contacts, developing appropriate communication links with the University’s Schools/Directorates and outside bodies as required
- To plan and deliver specific clinical projects, co-ordinating and supervising project teams created as needed.
- To work with practice manager to develop and deliver training within the eye clinic team.
- Undertake a variety of administrative duties to ensure excellent clinical care and support the department.
- To comply with annual re-registration requirements by taking ownership of own development, identifying training needs, maintaining CET accreditation, and updating Personal Development Plan
- To investigate and analysis specific issues, creating recommendation reports to help grow and develop the practice

Essential Criteria
Qualifications and Education
- GOC registration, and relevant experience in optometric practice. You will be expected to maintain CPD to ensure continued GOC registration, and to uphold membership of an NHS Health Board (or equivalent) to practice as an Optometrist in the Cardiff University, and/or any associated, patient-facing clinics.
Knowledge, Skills and Experience
- Substantial experience of working as an Optometrist with some teaching experience.
- Able to demonstrate professional clinical knowledge and product knowledge to give advice and guidance to staff, students, and patients.
- Proven experience in developing new processes and procedures.
- Ability of using practice management software as well as ability to use up-to-date versions of Microsoft Office.
Customer Service, Communication and Team Working
- Ability to communicate conceptually detailed and complex information effectively and professionally with a wide range of people including the elderly, people with sensory loss and/or special needs.
- Evidence of ability to explore customers’ needs and adapt the service accordingly to ensure a quality service is delivered
Planning, Analysis and Problem solving
- Evidence of ability to solve expansive problems using initiative and creativity; identify and propose both practical and innovative solutions.
- Evidence of demonstrable knowledge of key advances within Optometry
Desirable Criteria
- Postgraduate/Professional qualification
- Experience of working in a Higher Education environment
- Fluency in Welsh, written and oral.
